Parenteral Depot Formulation: Promising approach to reduce dosage frequency from day to a month

Current scenario of drug delivery is turning towards the application of long-acting parenteral which is also known as a parenteral depot. Parenteral depots are gaining abundant popularity among scientists due to having significant clinical benefits especially for the treatment of chronic ailments likewise Alzheimer’s, Psychosis, Parkinson, Depression, etc. These diseases possessed life-long characteristics hence required continuous medication. Depot delivery system consisting of an aqueous or oleaginous suspension administered through subcutaneous (SC) or muscular route leads to the formation of a depot at the site of injection, which acts as a drug reservoir and from that drug releases constantly at a predetermined level as per formulation. Long-acting formulation increases the aesthetic value by decreasing dosing frequency, thus, simplifying the dosage regimen. The parenteral depots have established their places in reducing the relapse rate of disease and maintaining the phase of therapy, hence, improving efficacy and treatment adherence.

Furthermore, the importance of the parenteral route is wisely utilized over here due to its valuable impact on the accurate delivery of drugs as it avoids the pre-systemic metabolism, as well as its onset of action, is very speedy. These kinds of formulations have tremendous potential to boost up the quality of the patient’s life.
